Midway Games brought Gauntlet: Dark Legacy to the Game Boy Advance in 2002, a time when portable systems were just starting to get ambitious with action titles. It was a solid attempt to squeeze a console-style hack and slash experience into your pocket, letting you tackle its fantasy world during a bus ride or between classes.
You control one of several heroes, like a warrior or an archer, and your goal is to fight through room after room of monsters to collect runestones and ultimately defeat the main villain. The gameplay revolves around clearing each screen of enemies, smashing pots and urns for gold and food, and managing your health as it constantly ticks down. The pace is fast and the difficulty can be punishing, especially when you're low on health and surrounded. It feels like a race against your own life bar as much as the monsters on screen.
