Game Overview

GB Genjin Land, known in Japan as Viva! Chikkun Oukoku, came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Red Company and published by Hudson Soft. It was part of that early wave of portable platformers, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate console action onto the small screen. This one brought Bonk, the caveman hero, into a compact adventure that felt right at home on Nintendo's handheld.

You control Bonk through a series of side scrolling stages, using his signature headbutt to break blocks and defeat enemies. The goal is to rescue the kidnapped Princess Za from the evil King Drool. Levels are built around bouncing on mushrooms, swimming through watery sections, and collecting smiley flowers for extra lives. The pacing is brisk, with short stages that encourage quick replays, though some later sections can get tricky. It feels like a condensed version of the TurboGrafx experience, simple but satisfying in short bursts.
