Play Gegege no Kitarou - Youkai Dai Makyou (Japan) (Beta) Online
You play as a one-eyed yokai kid bouncing through graveyards, punching umbrella ghosts and wall-crawling monsters—it’s like someone turned a weird manga into an NES game and forgot to finish it.

Game Overview
Ever stumble across an NES game that feels like it crawled out of a Japanese ghost story? Gegege no Kitarou: Youkai Dai Makyou is exactly that—a weird, wonderful beta that never got a full release, but somehow nails the creepy-cute vibe of the manga. You play as Kitarou, this one-eyed yokai kid who jumps and punches his way through side-scrolling levels packed with creatures straight out of folklore. The first stage throws you into a graveyard with floating lanterns and these wall-slithering Nurikabe monsters, and honestly, the pixel art alone makes it feel like playing an old anime.
It’s got that Mega Man energy—simple controls, tough bosses—but with way more umbrella-wielding karakasa spirits. Some of the mechanics are clearly unfinished (good luck figuring out what half the power-ups do), but that’s part of the charm. Found this tucked away in a ROM collection years ago, and I still boot it up just for the soundtrack—spooky chiptune shamisen hits different at 2 AM.
Definitely more of a curiosity than a polished gem, but if you’re into retro oddities or yokai lore, it’s hard to resist.
