GI Joe for the NES came out in 1991, published by Taxan. It was one of those action games that tried to capture the spirit of the cartoon and toys, fitting right in with the licensed titles of the era. You didn't see many games based on military teams, so it stood out a bit on the shelf.
You control one of four GI Joe team members, each with a unique weapon, like Snake Eyes' sword or Scarlett's crossbow. The goal is to fight through side-scrolling levels, defeat Cobra soldiers and bosses, and rescue captured allies. You move screen by screen, clearing enemies before advancing; you can also call in air support for special attacks. The game is fairly difficult, with respawning enemies and limited continues. It feels like a straightforward, challenging run-and-gun mission where every hit matters.
