You control Beckham himself, moving through levels screen by screen, using a soccer ball to attack enemies and interact with the environment. The main goal is to rescue your kidnapped teammates by clearing each area of foes and obstacles. Your primary mechanic is aiming and kicking the ball; it ricochets off walls, so you often have to think about angles to hit switches or enemies tucked in corners. You also collect power-ups that change your shot, like a fireball or a split kick, adding some variety to the action.
