Game Overview
Gold Rush! is one of those Sierra adventures that sticks with you—partly because of how brutal it can be, but mostly because of how alive the world feels. You play as Jerrod, a Brooklyn newspaper editor who drops everything when his estranged brother sends a letter with a gold nugget tucked under the stamp. Of course, you’re off to California in 1849, chasing family and fortune.
What’s cool is you get to pick how you get there: slog across the continent by wagon (cholera, bandits, and all), take a two-boat route through Panama (hope you don’t get swindled), or risk the long sea voyage around Cape Horn (storms, scurvy, mutiny—pick your poison). Each path has its own disasters waiting to happen, and Sierra being Sierra, you’ll die a lot. Sometimes it’s your fault, sometimes it’s just bad luck. Oh, and the clock’s always ticking—wait too long to leave, and prices shoot up while your house’s value plummets.
It’s got that classic AGI engine charm, but with bigger character sprites and a real sense of urgency. Just don’t get too attached to Jerrod surviving the first hour.
