Game Overview
Gold Rush! is one of those Sierra adventures that feels like a time capsule—both in theme and design. You play as Jerrod, a Brooklyn newspaper editor who drops everything when his long-lost brother sends a letter with a gold nugget tucked under the stamp. Of course, you’re off to California in 1849, chasing family and fortune.
What’s cool is how open it feels for an early Sierra game. You pick one of three routes to get west: slogging overland, braving the Panama crossing (boats, jungle, more boats), or risking the brutal Cape Horn voyage. Each one’s a gamble—cholera, shipwrecks, or just running out of cash because, yeah, the clock’s ticking. Wait too long and ticket prices soar while your house value plummets. Classic Sierra "save often" energy here.
It’s got some neat tricks for the old AGI engine, like bigger character sprites, but don’t expect SCI-era polish. Random deaths? Check. Obscure puzzles? Obviously. But there’s something weirdly charming about planning your route, watching supplies dwindle, and hoping you packed enough antivenom for that Panama detour. Just don’t get too attached to Jerrod.
