Golden Axe II for the Mega Play hardware, emulated through MAME, originally hit arcades in 1991 as a Sega release. It arrived as a follow up to the first game, building on the same side scrolling fantasy brawler template that was common in arcades at the time. You pick from three returning heroes, each with their own weapon and magic specialty, to take down the villain Death Adder once again.
You control either the barbarian, the amazon, or the dwarf, moving from left to right through each stage. Your main goal is to clear out waves of enemy knights, lizard men, and skeletons using basic attacks and a screen clearing magic spell that drains collected magic potions. You can also ride creatures like fire breathing dragons that add another layer of offense. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty can spike quickly if you get surrounded. It feels immediate and physical, with every hit landing with a satisfying sense of weight.
