Gumshoe is one of those weird NES games that makes you wonder what Nintendo was thinking—in a good way. You play as this little detective guy who just keeps running automatically to the right, and you have to shoot the ground with the Zapper light gun to make him jump over pits or onto platforms. Sounds simple, but the timing gets brutal fast.
At first, it feels like you’re just tapping the trigger randomly, but after a few tries, you start picking up the rhythm—shoot to jump, shoot again mid-air to extend it, and maybe squeeze in a shot at an enemy if you’re feeling fancy. The music’s got this weirdly catchy detective-movie vibe that somehow makes dying over and over less frustrating.
It’s definitely one of those “easy to pick up, hard to master” games. You’ll either love the challenge or throw the Zapper across the room by stage 3.
