Gunstar Future Heroes came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2006, developed by Treasure. It was a time when the handheld was full of ambitious action games, and this one felt like a direct callback to its Sega Genesis predecessor, built for a smaller screen but with the same spirit.
You control a lone hero fighting through waves of robotic enemies across different planets. Your main goal is to stop an evil empire, moving screen by screen through side-scrolling stages. The signature mechanics are the weapon fusion system, where you combine two different shot types on the fly, and the ability to freely aim in any direction. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can spike during some of the larger boss encounters. It feels sharp and responsive, like every movement and shot was finely tuned.
