Gyruss came out on the NES in 1988, a Konami port of their earlier arcade game. It was one of those space shooters that felt a bit different from the rest, trading the standard left-to-right scrolling for something that wrapped all the way around.
You control a lone fighter ship positioned on a circular path, firing into the center of the screen as enemies materialize and spiral inward in hypnotic patterns. The goal is to clear each wave to advance further into our solar system, from Neptune all the way to Earth. Key mechanics include a rapid three-way shot you can power up, and the ability to execute a warp jump for a brief respite by collecting enough special items. The pacing is relentless, the difficulty steep, especially when the screen fills with intricate enemy formations. It feels like a tense, rhythmic dance where one mistimed shot can end your run.
