Heavy Barrel came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Data East. You control a lone commando (or two, with a friend) fighting through a terrorist stronghold screen by screen. Your main goal is to find the six scattered parts of the ultimate weapon, the Heavy Barrel itself, hidden in crates throughout the complex. The core loop involves clearing each area of soldiers and vehicles, then smashing everything breakable in hopes a keycard or weapon piece appears. You start with a weak rifle but can grab better guns like flamethrowers or spread shots from downed enemies. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming from all sides, and the difficulty is unforgiving if you try to go it alone. Finding that final weapon piece and unleashing the screen-clearing blast of the assembled Heavy Barrel is an incredibly satisfying payoff for all the chaos.
