Hirake! Ponkikki is one of those weird little NES games that makes you go, "Wait, how did this not get released outside Japan?" At first glance, it looks like a cutesy platformer—you control this round, bouncy creature named Ponkikki through maze-like levels—but then suddenly you're turning into a block to weigh down switches or morphing into a balloon to float past spikes.
The puzzles start simple (push a crate here, dodge a snail enemy there) but get surprisingly clever by the later stages. I got stuck for way too long on one level where you have to chain transformations in just the right order. The fan translation helps a ton—no more guessing what those power-ups do—but even without it, the charm comes through in the bright colors and Ponkikki's ridiculous little hop animation.
It's not perfect (some hit detection feels a bit off), but there's something endearing about how much variety they packed into such a weird little package. If you've played Adventures of Lolo and wished it had more chaotic energy, this might be your jam.
