Honoo no Doukyuuji: Dodge Danpei 2 came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by TOSE and published by Sunsoft. It was part of that wave of later NES releases that tried to squeeze a bit more out of the hardware, often with mixed results. This one was based on a sports anime about dodgeball, which wasn't exactly a common theme, even back then.
You control a team of dodgeball players, moving them around a court to pick up the ball, aim, and unleash special throws. The main goal is to defeat the opposing team by hitting them with the ball before they can do the same to you. Signature mechanics include charging your throw for more power, executing curve shots that bend in unexpected ways, and using super moves that fill the screen with dramatic, if slightly choppy, animations. The pacing is fast and a little unforgiving; the computer opponents read your moves a little too well sometimes. It feels like a chaotic, slightly broken arcade sports game that is much more fun with a friend than alone.
