Game Overview

Italy 1990 - Winners Edition was one of those Amiga football games that felt like a big deal back in the day. It had all the official teams and kits from the 1990 World Cup, which was enough to make it feel legit even if the gameplay was a little rough around the edges. You could tell they tried to capture the tournament atmosphere—the pixelated crowds, the slightly-too-long loading screens, that distinctive Amiga soundtrack.

Matches played out in an isometric view, which was pretty standard at the time, but the controls took some getting used to. Slide tackles were weirdly effective, and the goalkeepers had a habit of doing the most dramatic dives even when the ball was nowhere near them. Still, if you were into football and had an Amiga, this was one of the better options before the likes of Sensible Soccer took over.

It’s definitely a nostalgia trip now, but back then, it felt like the closest thing to playing in the actual World Cup—minus Maradona’s questionable refereeing decisions.
