Game Overview
Kaijuu Monogatari is one of those weird, wonderful NES RPGs that slipped under the radar outside Japan. You start off in this cozy little village where suddenly—surprise!—you're recruiting monsters to fight alongside you. Not just any monsters, either. We're talking everything from dopey-looking blobs to creatures that look like they escaped from a kid's sketchbook.
The battles feel like a stripped-down Dragon Quest with a playful twist—your team shuffles around in formation, and some of the monster animations are just goofy enough to make you grin. The overworld music has that classic 8-bit RPG vibe, all bouncy and optimistic, like you're setting off on a Saturday morning cartoon adventure.
It's rough around the edges (good luck without a guide if you don't read Japanese), but there's something charming about how unapologetically weird it is. You'll either bounce off it in 10 minutes or end up weirdly attached to your team of misfit creatures.
