Game Overview

Kampfgruppe is one of those deep, crunchy tactical wargames where you can practically smell the diesel fumes and hear the tank treads grinding. You're commanding either German or Soviet forces on the Eastern Front, moving platoons of tanks, infantry, and artillery across hex grids that feel like they were ripped straight from old military maps.

The four historical scenarios are brutal in the best way—trying to break through to Stalingrad in winter '42 feels completely different from pushing toward Berlin in '45. And if you burn through those, the random scenario generator will keep throwing new nightmares at you. I lost an entire Panzer company in a randomly generated forest ambush because I got cocky and didn't scout properly.

Turns play out in this tense back-and-forth—you plot movements, watch the enemy counter, then scramble to adjust. The victory point system means even a messy retreat can turn into a minor win if you inflict enough damage on the way out. Just don't expect quick matches—this is the kind of game where you'll stare at the screen for ten minutes debating whether to risk your last T-34 on a flanking maneuver.

It's unforgiving, historically dense, and absolutely perfect if you like your strategy games with a side of archival research.
