Game Overview

King of Kings came out for the NES in 1991, developed and published by Namco. It was part of that wave of late-era NES games that tried to do something a little different, in this case a turn-based strategy game set in a biblical context. It wasn't a big hit, but it had a certain quiet ambition for the hardware.

You control armies of soldiers, priests, and chariots on a grid-based map, moving them one unit at a time to outmaneuver and attack your opponent's forces. The main objective is to capture the enemy's capital city or destroy all their units. Two key mechanics are the fog of war, which hides enemy movements until your units are close, and the ability to combine multiple weaker units into a single, stronger battalion. The pacing is slow and deliberate, demanding careful planning over quick reactions. It feels like a thoughtful, almost meditative puzzle of war.
