Game Overview

I picked up Mushiking on the Game Boy Advance back in 2005, a Sega title that came out when the handheld was absolutely packed with RPGs and adventure games. It stood out because it wasn't about swords or magic; it was about beetles. The whole concept felt niche, even then, but it had a strange charm that pulled you in.

You control a young boy who collects and trains beetles, pitting them against other insects in one-on-one battles. The main goal is to build the strongest beetle fighter you can, traveling through forests and challenging other trainers. Combat is built on a rock-paper-scissors system; you choose an attack type and hope you outguess your opponent. You also feed your beetles special sap to boost their stats and evolve them into stronger forms. The pacing is quick, with battles resolved in seconds, but the strategy comes from managing your team and anticipating enemy moves. It feels surprisingly tense for a game about bugs, like a high-stakes card game where every match counts.
