You control a young boy who collects and trains a variety of powerful beetles to fight in tournaments. The main objective is to defeat other trainers and become the Mushiking champion. The core gameplay involves one-on-one beetle battles that play out like a fast-paced game of rock-paper-scissors; you choose an attack type (horn, pincer, or leg) to counter your opponent's move. Winning battles earns you new beetles and items to strengthen your team. The pacing is brisk, with matches that are over quickly, win or lose. It feels surprisingly strategic for such a simple concept, making each victory satisfying.
