I picked up Lawnmower Man for the Game Boy back in 1993, a time when licensed games based on movies were everywhere. It was published by THQ, and it tried to capture the strange, tech-thriller vibe of the film on the handheld. You don't see many games that mix suburban settings with virtual reality chaos, especially not on the original Game Boy's limited hardware.
You control Jobe, a landscaper who gets pulled into a dangerous virtual world. The main goal is to navigate through both the real world and the digital simulation, hacking computer terminals and fighting off enemies like robotic dogs and mutant creatures. The gameplay shifts between top-down exploration for outdoor areas and first-person segments inside the virtual environments, which was an ambitious choice for the system. It's a fairly difficult game with some confusing level design and unforgiving enemy patterns. Playing it feels like wrestling with a clunky but oddly fascinating piece of early 90s ambition.
