Lord Monarch: Tokoton Sentou Densetsu came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Nihon Falcom. It was part of that wave of Japanese strategy and simulation games that didn't always make it overseas, so discovering it felt like finding a secret. The graphics and sound are very much of that era, straightforward and functional without a lot of flash.
You control a king trying to build up a kingdom from almost nothing. The main goal is to expand your territory, recruit an army, and conquer rival castles. You manage resources, direct soldiers to explore the map screen by screen, and engage in large, automated battles against enemy forces. The pacing is frantic; you are constantly making decisions under pressure as enemies advance. It feels like trying to build a sandcastle as the tide comes in.
