Lord Monarch – Tokoton Sentou Densetsu is one of those Genesis games I stumbled onto years ago and couldn’t put down. You start off with a little castle and a handful of troops—some spearmen, maybe an archer or two—and suddenly you’re scrambling to build walls, recruit more soldiers, and fend off these weirdly aggressive enemy waves. The sprites are tiny but full of personality, like someone shrunk a war game down to toy soldier scale.
It’s got that perfect mix of chaos and strategy where you’ll be frantically directing units one second, then laughing as your knights accidentally knock over their own barricades the next. The controls take a minute to click (old-school RTS vibes), but once they do, it’s weirdly addictive—like if Pikmin had a baby with a ’90s arcade game. Not many people talk about this one, but it’s a blast if you like games where things go gloriously wrong in the best way.
Also, the music slaps. That chiptune victory fanfare lives in my head rent-free.
