Play Lord of the Rings Online

I picked up Lord of the Rings for the Sega Genesis back in 1994, a game published by Interplay Entertainment. It was one of those licensed titles that came out during the 16-bit era, trying to capture the feel of the books in an action adventure format. The graphics were typical for the system, with large character sprites and detailed backgrounds that did a decent job of representing Middle-earth.

You control Aragorn through a series of side-scrolling levels, fighting orcs and trolls with your sword while occasionally switching to Gandalf for spellcasting segments. The main goal is to journey from the Shire to Mount Doom, defeating enemies and navigating environmental hazards along the way. Key mechanics include screen by screen exploration, switching between characters for specific puzzles, and collecting items to restore health or unlock new areas. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with limited continues and some awkward enemy hit detection. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt to translate a grand story into the language of a Genesis action game.
