EA Sports released Madden '95 for the Game Boy in 1994, bringing NFL action to the handheld during an era when portable football games were still pretty basic. You control all 22 players, calling plays from a condensed playbook and executing runs or passes with simple button combinations. The main goal is to outscore the opponent by moving the ball downfield, drive by drive. Signature mechanics include making pre snap adjustments like audibles and substitutions, plus executing special plays such as HB dives that can break through defensive lines if timed right. The pacing is methodical, almost strategic, with a difficulty that spikes noticeably against tougher teams. It feels satisfying to grind out a win through careful play calling and a few well executed breaks.
