Master Chu the Drunkard Hu came out in 1989 for the NES, published by Color Dreams. It was one of those unlicensed titles that slipped onto the system, a weird little action game that felt both familiar and completely off. You don't see many games where your main companion is perpetually inebriated.
You control Master Chu, navigating through side-scrolling levels and temples. Your goal is to find a set of magical symbols, all while protecting your drunken friend Hu, who stumbles along behind you. You fight off spirits and other enemies with a staff, and the screen advances one section at a time, locking you in until you clear the area. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is unforgiving; enemies respawn quickly, and Hu's constant wobbling makes him a liability. It feels like herding a very drunk cat through a haunted house.
