Metroid Zelda (Hack) is a weird little NES rom that mashes up exploration and dungeon crawling in a way that shouldn't work but kinda does. You start with that familiar Metroid-style side-scrolling, except now you're poking around for keys and heart containers like a Zelda game.

The controls feel stiff at first, jumping between platforms while swiping at enemies with a sword takes some getting used to. But after a while, you start finding upgrades that change how you move, and suddenly backtracking through old areas doesn't feel like a chore.

Some of the level design is janky, like hidden paths that aren't telegraphed well, but stumbling into a new area by accident has its own charm. The music is a mix of familiar chiptunes, which fits the whole crossover vibe.
