Game Overview

Metroid II: Return of Samus came out on the Game Boy in 1991, developed by Nintendo R&D1. It was one of the few action-exploration games on the system that really tried to build a lonely, atmospheric world despite the hardware limits. You could feel the ambition even through the monochrome graphics and tinny sound.

You control Samus Aran, a bounty hunter sent to exterminate the Metroids on their home planet. The goal is to hunt down and destroy every last one, with a counter on screen tracking your progress. The game is structured around screen by screen exploration, with upgrades like the Spider Ball and Space Jump opening up new paths. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, and the difficulty comes from limited visibility and unpredictable enemy behavior. It feels tense and isolating, like you are truly alone in a hostile underground world.
