Konami released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Return of the Shredder for the Sega Genesis in 1992. It was a time when side-scrolling beat 'em ups dominated the platform, and this game fit right in with its straightforward action and familiar characters. You could tell it was built on the foundation of earlier arcade titles, but it had its own feel on home consoles.
You control one of the four turtles, each with their signature weapon, and fight through waves of Foot Soldiers and other mutants across New York City. The main goal is to defeat Shredder and stop his latest scheme, moving screen by screen through urban environments. You can pick up health items and temporary power-ups, and certain stages let you throw enemies or use environmental objects. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can spike in later levels, especially during boss fights. It feels satisfying to land a series of hits and clear a crowded screen without taking damage.
