Monster Rancher Advanced is one of those games that starts simple but gets weirdly deep. At first, you're just feeding and training your monster, trying not to overwork it. Then you realize every CD you own can unlock a different creature, which is a cool touch if you still have a stack of discs lying around.
The battles feel a little stiff at first, but once your monster learns a few moves, it gets more interesting. I spent way too much time trying to breed the perfect one, only to have it age out before I could enter a major tournament. That part stung.
It's not flashy, but there's something satisfying about watching your weird little monster grow stronger. Monster Rancher Advanced makes you care about pixels in a way few games do.
