Moon Ranger came out in 1990 for the NES, developed by Bunch Games. It was one of those late-era action platformers that tried to do a little more with the hardware, with a sci-fi theme that felt a bit different from the usual fantasy or military settings. You don't hear about it too often, but it had its own ideas.
You control the Moon Ranger, a lone hero fighting through alien mining installations on the moon. Your goal is to gather pieces of a gamma bomb to destroy the alien operation. You move screen by screen, blasting robots and alien soldiers with your laser pistol, and you can find power-ups that change your shot type. The levels are maze-like, with keycards to find and doors to unlock, which gives it a slight exploratory feel. The pacing is deliberate, and some sections are quite tough, with enemy patterns you have to learn. It feels like a methodical, slightly claustrophobic crawl through hostile territory.
