I picked up NASCAR 99 for the Nintendo 64 back in 1998, when EA Sports was putting out a lot of solid racing titles. It was one of those games that felt right at home on the N64, especially if you were into motorsports and wanted something a bit more serious than Mario Kart but still accessible. The graphics were decent for the time, and it had that distinct late-90s EA polish, even if the draw distance sometimes left you guessing what was coming up around the bend.

You control a stock car, aiming to qualify well and then race to the front of the pack. The handling is weighty; you have to manage your speed through turns and watch for tire wear over long runs. Drafting behind other cars gives you a speed boost, and the damage model means one bad scrape can ruin your day. The AI drivers race aggressively, so you’re constantly fighting for position, not just cruising. It feels tense and satisfying when you finally thread the needle through a three-wide situation and come out ahead.
