Man, Nekketsu Koukou Dodgeball Bu is like if someone took dodgeball and cranked it up to 11. You pick your team of delinquent-looking high schoolers—I always go for the guy with the headband—and suddenly you're hurling balls so hard they practically break the sound barrier.
The first time I saw someone get knocked out cold from a single throw, I knew this wasn't gym class rules. There's something hilarious about watching your character wind up for a Dragon Shot and just obliterate three opponents at once. And the physics? Let's just say realism took the day off.
It's got that same rough-around-the-edges charm as River City Ransom, complete with ridiculous animations and over-the-top sound effects. The controls take a minute to get used to—figuring out how to actually catch the ball instead of just dodging was my first hurdle—but once it clicks, you'll be pulling off ridiculous trick shots like a pro.
Fair warning: the AI doesn't mess around. You'll be cruising along, then suddenly eat a ball to the face from halfway across the court. Still one of the most satisfying NES sports games to play with a friend, even if you end up yelling at each other more than the opponents.
