Game Overview

Oh man, Nekojara Monogatari is one of those weird little Game Boy games that makes you go "what is this?" in the best way possible. You boot it up and suddenly you're in this pixelated world of cats doing... something between pet simulation and light RPG stuff? The menus are all in Japanese, but the icons of tiny cats grooming themselves or batting at objects somehow make sense anyway.

I spent my first 10 minutes just poking around—feeding what I think was a calico, watching cats nap in sunbeams, accidentally making one mad when I tapped the wrong button. There's definitely some sort of progression happening, but half the fun is figuring it out as you go. The chiptune soundtrack has this cozy, slightly off-kilter vibe that perfectly matches the game's "90s Japan decided cats needed their own Tamagotchi-RPG hybrid" energy.

It's not for everyone, but if you like digging up obscure, charming relics (or just really love cats), this one sticks with you. I still don't know if I was "playing it right," and that's kind of the point.
