Game Overview
NHL Breakaway 99 was Acclaim’s second (and last) hockey game for the N64, and honestly, it felt like a solid upgrade from '98. The rosters were updated for the '97-98 season, so you could finally play with the right lineups instead of squinting at outdated stats. There’s something weirdly satisfying about tweaking all the little settings—turn injuries on if you want chaos, crank up fighting if you’re in the mood for some old-school hockey brawls.
Five modes to pick from, but I always ended up jumping into exhibition matches first—just to test if my slap shots still felt overpowered (they did). The season mode’s the real meat of it though. Win games, earn points, and dump them into making your players slightly less prone to injuries or slightly better at not whiffing on open nets. Steve Yzerman chimes in with advice, which is either helpful or just makes you wish he’d stop stating the obvious.
It’s not perfect—the graphics were already looking rough even back then—but if you missed the era of arcade-style hockey games with a bit of strategy mixed in, this one’s a decent time capsule.
