Onmyou Taisenki Zeroshiki came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Banpresto. It was part of that wave of late GBA titles that really pushed what the hardware could do with strategy and presentation, sitting alongside other tactical games without quite reaching the same level of mainstream recognition. You take on the role of an onmyouji, a master of spiritual arts, navigating a world filled with supernatural threats.
You control a party of characters on grid-based maps, summoning shikigami (spirit familiars) to fight yokai. The main objective is to clear each stage by defeating all enemies or achieving specific mission goals. Key mechanics include positioning your units to set up combo attacks and using elemental affinities to exploit enemy weaknesses. The pacing is deliberate, with a difficulty that punishes careless placement; one wrong move can leave a unit isolated and quickly overwhelmed. It feels like a careful, thoughtful puzzle where every decision carries weight.
