Panic Restaurant came out for the NES in 1992, published by Taito. It was part of that wave of late-era platformers that tried to stand out with a strong theme and some creative mechanics, rather than just pushing more sprites on screen. You play as a chef named Cookie, navigating a haunted restaurant room by room. Your main goal is to reclaim your eatery from the food monsters that have taken over. You attack enemies by swinging a frying pan, and you can also collect temporary power-ups like a lollipop that acts as a boomerang or a chili pepper that lets you breathe fire. The levels are compact but dense with hazards, from bouncing eggs to sentient soup pots, and the difficulty is steady without being overly punishing. It feels like a brisk, inventive scramble through a kitchen that's lost its mind.
