Parodius da! came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed and published by Konami. It was a time when the NES library was full of serious shooters and platformers, so this game stood out immediately for being something completely different, a parody that didn't take itself seriously at all.

You control one of several oddball ships, like a penguin or a transforming Vic Viper, and your goal is to fly from left to right, destroying everything in your path. The core mechanics involve collecting power-up bells to cycle through weapon upgrades, like lasers and options, and grabbing the right bell color to trigger a screen clearing special attack. The pacing is frantic, with enemy patterns that are chaotic but learnable, and the difficulty can be surprisingly sharp underneath all the silliness.
