Payback (EU) on GBA is basically a scaled-down GTA clone, but it's impressive how much they crammed into a tiny cartridge. You start in some grimy city corner, immediately stealing whatever car you can find just to get moving. The handling feels stiff at first, like the vehicles are sliding on ice, but you get used to it.
What's weirdly satisfying is how missions branch based on your choices. I botched a getaway once by crashing into a bus, and the next mission had me hunting down the witness instead of moving up the crime ladder. The phone booth system for jobs feels dated now, but back then it gave this oddly immersive "street level criminal" vibe.
The soundtrack's aggressive beats actually hold up, though the 3D effects look rough by today's standards. Payback (EU) is janky in places, but there's something charming about its ambition on such limited hardware.
