I picked up Phantasy Star Collection on the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a compilation put out by Sega that brought three of their classic 8-bit and 16-bit RPGs to a handheld. It was a solid way to experience these older titles on the go, fitting right into that era when publishers were keen on re-releasing their back catalog for portable systems.

You control a party of adventurers, moving them across an overworld map and through towns to gather clues and gear. The main goal involves exploring labyrinthine, first-person dungeons, fighting frequent random monsters in turn-based combat, and gradually piecing together the story of each game. The pacing can feel slow by modern standards, with a high encounter rate and some dated mechanics, but there's a tangible sense of progress as you uncover new spells and better equipment. It feels like a direct, unvarnished trip into early console RPG design.
