Play Pocket Camera Online
Snap grainy black and white photos, adjust contrast, and experiment with filters using your Game Boy in Pocket Camera.
Pocket Camera was a 1998 release for the original Game Boy, developed and published by Nintendo. It was a niche accessory and game that felt very much of its time, arriving late in the console's life when players were eager for new ways to interact with the hardware. You slotted a special cartridge into your system, which had a physical lens protruding from the top, turning the handheld into a primitive digital camera.
You control the camera's functions through a simple menu, aiming the bulky unit at a subject and pressing a button to capture a grainy, black and white image. The main objective is simply to take pictures, with the game offering a few basic filters and a puzzle mode that uses your photos. The signature mechanics involve the extremely low resolution capture, the manual contrast adjustment needed to get a barely recognizable shot, and the novelty of storing those images on a game cartridge. The pacing is slow and deliberate, as getting a usable picture requires good lighting and a very still subject. It feels less like playing a game and more like experimenting with a fascinating, deeply flawed piece of technology, a charmingly awkward attempt to merge the physical and digital worlds.
