1991 RPG for Amiga. Party-based AD&D adventure with turn-based combat. Create 6 characters, explore dungeons, battle enemies using tactical positioning. Follows Pool of Radiance story.
Game Overview
Pools of Darkness picks up a decade after Pool of Radiance, bringing you back to Phlan—only this time, the city’s peace is just a facade. Everything seems fine until you’re sent on a diplomatic escort mission, and suddenly Bane’s lieutenants start tearing through Faerun. Classic D&D stakes, right?
You’ll roll a party of up to six characters, picking from all the usual AD&D races and classes. I always end up with at least one reckless fighter and a wizard who runs out of spells at the worst possible moment. Once you’re done tweaking stats (good luck resisting the urge to reroll for perfect strength), you start poking around Phlan before heading out to the world map.
Combat’s turn-based and grid-heavy—you move each character individually, positioning matters, and enemies love ambushing you at inconvenient times. Dungeons feel tense because you never know when a random encounter’s going to drain your last healing spell. The Gold Box system shows its age, but there’s something satisfying about outmaneuvering a pack of gnolls with careful positioning.
It’s very much a product of its time, but if you’re into methodical, old-school D&D combat and world-hopping adventure, this one’s got that classic itch.
