Princess Tomato in Salad Kingdom is one of those weird, wonderful NES games that makes you go, "Wait, what?" You're Percy the cucumber (of course), trying to save Princess Tomato from—get this—Sir Cucumber, who's apparently gone rogue. The whole thing plays out like a veggie-themed Alice in Wonderland, with point-and-click puzzles and dialogue so packed with food puns it should come with a groan warning.
First time I played, I got stuck for way too long trying to figure out how to bribe a sentient mushroom with the right item. The pixel art has this cheerful, storybook look—carrots wear hats, radishes have mustaches, everything's just vibing in Salad Kingdom. It's slow by today's standards, but there's something oddly charming about how committed it is to being a wholesome vegetable fairy tale.
Originally a Japan-only release, it’s definitely more about the quirky writing than action. You’ll either love its offbeat humor or wonder why you’re negotiating with an eggplant. I still think about the dancing corn cob sometimes.
