I remember picking up The Punisher for the NES back in 1990, a game developed by Beam Software and published by LJN. It was one of those licensed titles that came out during the console's peak, when every movie or comic seemed to get a pixelated adaptation. The box art promised gritty action, but you never knew what you were really getting until you popped in the cartridge.

You control Frank Castle, moving from left to right through city streets and enemy hideouts, shooting thugs with your handgun or a machine gun picked up from defeated foes. The main goal is straightforward: rescue hostages and take down crime bosses across several stages. Signature mechanics include screen by screen progression, occasional hostage rescue sequences that require careful aim to avoid hitting civilians, and boss fights that often rely on pattern recognition. The pacing is aggressive, with enemies spawning frequently, and the difficulty can feel unforgiving due to limited continues and some inconsistent hit detection. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt to capture the character's violent charm, even with its technical shortcomings.
