Play Robotech - The Macross Saga (U)(Mode7) Online
Pilot a Veritech through side-scrolling dogfights, transforming mid-battle to dodge missile swarms while the Macross love triangle drama plays out between missions.
I picked up Robotech: The Macross Saga for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a time when licensed games were a real mixed bag. It was published by TDK Mediactive, and it tried to bring the sprawling space opera of the original anime to the small screen. For a handheld title of that era, it had ambition, even if it didn't always hit the mark.
You control Rick Hunter, piloting a Veritech fighter that can transform between three modes: fighter for speed, guardian for balanced combat, and battloid for ground fights. The main goal is to survive wave after wave of Zentraedi forces across side-scrolling stages, protecting the SDF-1 Macross. Key mechanics include switching forms to adapt to different threats and managing a limited supply of missiles alongside your standard gun. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially during boss encounters. It feels like a constant struggle to stay airborne, capturing the desperate tone of the series.
