I picked up Robotech: The Macross Saga for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a time when handhelds were really hitting their stride with solid action titles. It was developed and published by Tomy, and it stood out as one of the few games that tried to capture the feel of the classic anime on a small screen. The GBA had a lot of ports and original games back then, and this one fit right in with its mix of side-scrolling and first-person combat.
You control a Veritech pilot, switching between three different modes: fighter, guardian, and battloid. The main goal is to blast through waves of enemy Zentraedi forces across various missions, protecting your allies and completing objectives. Signature mechanics include transforming your mech on the fly to adapt to different combat situations, and managing your energy reserves for weapons and shields. The pacing is fairly intense, with enemy patterns that require quick reflexes, though some levels can feel repetitive. It feels satisfying to nail a perfect transformation mid-fight and unleash a barrage of missiles on a tough boss.
