Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2 on NES drops you right into ancient China’s chaos—pick a warlord (or make your own) and try not to get steamrolled by Cao Cao’s massive armies. The map’s split into 41 provinces, and you’ll spend half your time bribing officers with high Charm stats to join you while the other half is spent nervously watching Liu Bei’s territory expand way too fast.
Every character has stats for War, Intelligence, and Charm—some guys are beasts in duels but can’t negotiate their way out of a paper bag. I learned that the hard way when my strongest general got talked into defecting by some smooth-talking strategist. Conquering China sounds simple until you realize everyone’s backstabbing each other while you’re still trying to figure out how to boost your rice production.
It’s one of those games where you’ll lose hours just micromanaging your cities and plotting invasions, only for your best-laid plans to collapse because someone’s Charm stat was 5 points too low.
