Runark came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, developed and published by Taito. It was part of that early wave of action platformers on the system, games that often leaned into dark fantasy and demanded quick reflexes. You control a lone warrior exploring a cursed castle, room by room. Your main goal is to survive the onslaught of monsters and find your way through the labyrinthine structure. Combat is straightforward but tense; you swing your sword at close range, and timing is everything against fast, aggressive enemies. The game scrolls screen by screen, locking you into each new area until you clear it of threats. It's brutally difficult, with limited health and relentless enemy placements. Playing Runark feels like a constant, desperate struggle against overwhelming odds.
