SaGa 3: Jikuu no Hasha came out on the Game Boy in 1991, developed and published by Square. It was part of that early wave of handheld RPGs, a time when games were built around small screens and long battery life, but still tried to pack in big ideas. You could tell they were experimenting, pushing what a portable adventure could be.

You control a party of young heroes, each with the potential to transform into mutants, cyborgs, or monsters as you explore the world screen by screen. Your main goal is to travel through different time periods to prevent a catastrophe, fighting enemies in turn-based battles that rely on a spark system for learning new skills. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can spike without much warning, especially in some of the more maze-like dungeons. It feels like charting your own strange path through a world that doesn’t hold your hand.
