Game Overview

Okay, so Sansuu 5 & 6 Nen - Keisan Game looks like just another boring math game at first glance—until you actually play it. It’s got that weirdly satisfying NES vibe where the menu music somehow makes long division feel exciting. You pick between grades 5 or 6 (I went with 5 because, let’s be honest, my mental math isn’t what it used to be), and suddenly you’re racing against a tiny on-screen clock to solve problems.

The pixelated teacher character nods approvingly when you get things right, which is weirdly motivating. And yeah, it’s all in Japanese, but numbers are universal—though I did panic the first time kanji popped up in a word problem. Turns out it’s way more fun than flashcards, especially when you’re sweating over multiplication tables while that cheerful 8-bit soundtrack loops in the background.

It’s definitely niche, but if you’ve ever wanted to time-travel back to a 1980s Japanese classroom, this is your ticket. Just don’t blame me when you catch yourself muttering “kuku” (that’s Japanese for times tables, by the way) in the shower.
